Balancing Technology and Torah Values in the Digital Age

The smartphone didn't destroy the heimishe world, and neither will AI. But both require the same thing: boundaries, seichel, and a clear sense of what we are and what we are not.

There's a tendency in the heimishe world to treat every new technology as a threat. The radio was a threat. The television was a threat. The internet was a threat. The smartphone was a threat. And now, AI is a threat.

Each of these was a threat — in the wrong hands, without boundaries, without seichel. And each of them, in the right hands, with the right boundaries, became a tool that the heimishe world learned to use without losing itself. We have heimishe radio, heimishe internet (filtered), heimishe phones (with filters). The question was never "ban or embrace?" — it was always "how do we use this without losing who we are?"

AI is the same.

The Real Danger Is Not the Tool

The real danger of any technology is not the technology itself. It's what it does to your time, your attention, and your inner life. A smartphone in the hands of someone with no self-control is a disaster. The same phone, with a filter and a disciplined user, is a useful tool.

AI is no different. An unfiltered AI, used without boundaries, can be a portal to the same inappropriate content as the open internet. A filtered AI, used for specific, purposeful tasks, is a productivity tool — like a calculator or a typewriter, just more powerful.

The question is not "is AI dangerous?" The question is "am I using it the way a ben-Torah uses things — with boundaries, with purpose, with seichel?"

Three Principles for the Digital Age

1. Purpose before tool. Before you open any app — AI, social media, anything — ask: what am I here to do? If you don't have an answer, don't open it. This single habit, practiced consistently, eliminates most technology problems.

2. Boundaries are not optional. A filter on your internet is not a chumrah; it's a baseline. A Torah-based moderation layer on your AI is the same. You wouldn't drive a car without brakes. Don't use a technology without guardrails.

3. Time is the currency of Torah. Every hour spent scrolling, chatting, or generating images for fun is an hour not spent learning, not spent with family, not spent doing the things that actually matter. This doesn't mean technology is bad — it means you need to be honest about the trade-off.

What This Looks Like in Practice

For AI specifically, here's what balanced use looks like:

  • Use it for tasks, not for entertainment. Drafting an email, summarizing a text, generating a flyer image — these are tasks. Spending an hour "chatting" with an AI for fun is entertainment, and it's where the time-sink danger lives.
  • Set a time limit. Just like you might limit your news reading to 15 minutes, limit your AI use to the time you actually need to get your task done.
  • Keep it filtered. Use an AI with a Torah-based moderation layer. The filter is the difference between a tool and a portal.
  • Don't let it replace people. AI can draft an email, but your relationship with your customer is still yours. AI can summarize a text, but your rebbi is still your rebbi. The tool handles the drafting; the relationship stays human.

The Bigger Picture

The heimishe world has survived every technology that was supposed to destroy it. Not by banning everything — bans don't work long-term — but by developing a culture of disciplined, purposeful, filtered use. That culture is the real protection. The filters and the rules are just the expression of it.

AI will be the same. The community will figure out how to use it well, because that's what the community always does. The question for each of us, individually, is whether we'll be part of figuring it out — or whether we'll be the ones who let the tool use us instead of the other way around.

Choose to use it well. That's the whole Torah of it.
