How to Write Better Prompts: A Guide for the Heimishe User
By Heimish AI Editorial Team
The difference between a useless AI answer and a brilliant one is almost always the prompt. Here is how to ask better questions and get better results.
Most people who try AI and are disappointed are not disappointed by the AI — they're disappointed by their own prompts. The AI is like a brilliant but literal assistant who knows nothing about your situation. If you give it a vague instruction, you get a vague result. If you give it a specific, well-structured instruction, you get something genuinely useful.
This is a skill, and like any skill, it improves with practice. Here's how to think about it.
The Five Elements of a Good Prompt
1. Role. Tell the AI who it should be. "You are an experienced business consultant." "You are a careful translator." "You are a helpful assistant who writes in a warm, heimishe tone." This sets the voice and the perspective.
2. Task. What exactly do you want it to do? Be specific. Not "help me with an email" but "write a follow-up email to a customer who hasn't responded to my quote."
3. Context. What does the AI need to know? "The customer is a small business owner in Brooklyn. I sent the quote two weeks ago. I want to be polite but not pushy." Context is what separates a generic answer from a useful one.
4. Format. How do you want the output? "Give me three short paragraphs." "Give me a bulleted list." "Give me a table with two columns." If you don't specify, the AI will guess, and it often guesses wrong.
5. Constraints. What should the AI avoid? "Don't use slang." "Keep it under 200 words." "Don't include a greeting or sign-off." Constraints prevent the AI from adding things you don't want.
Before and After
Let's see the difference.
Weak prompt: "Write an email to my supplier about a late order."
Strong prompt: "You are a small business owner. Write a follow-up email to a supplier. I placed an order on September 1st for 50 wooden shtenderim. It's now September 15th and the order hasn't arrived. I need it by next Friday for a simchah. Be polite but clear that this is urgent. Two short paragraphs. No greeting — I'll add that myself. Professional but warm tone."
The weak prompt gives you a generic email you'll have to rewrite. The strong prompt gives you something you can almost send as-is.
Common Mistakes
Too vague. "Make it better" — better how? Shorter? More formal? More friendly? Tell the AI exactly what "better" means.
Too long and rambling. The opposite problem. A prompt that's a wall of unstructured text confuses the AI. Use the five elements above as a checklist, and keep each element to a sentence or two.
No examples. If you want a specific style, show the AI an example. "Write in a style similar to this: [paste a paragraph you like]." This is called few-shot prompting, and it dramatically improves results.
Expecting perfection on the first try. The first response is a draft. Read it, figure out what's wrong, and ask for a revision: "Make it shorter, remove the second paragraph, and make the tone warmer." Two or three rounds of refinement is normal.
Prompt Patterns That Work
Here are a few patterns you can reuse:
The summary: "Summarize the following text in 5 bullet points, each under 15 words: [paste text]"
The translation: "Translate the following into natural, idiomatic Yiddish (not word-for-word — capture the meaning): [paste text]"
The brainstorm: "Give me 10 ideas for [topic]. Be creative but practical. Number them."
The rewrite: "Rewrite the following to be more [formal/friendly/concise], keeping the same meaning: [paste text]"
The explanation: "Explain [concept] as if you were teaching someone who knows nothing about it. Use a simple analogy."
The Secret: Specificity
If you remember one thing from this guide, remember this: specificity is the whole game. The AI is not mind-reading. It only knows what you tell it. The more specific you are about what you want, the context, the format, and the constraints, the better the result.
It takes an extra 30 seconds to write a good prompt instead of a lazy one. Those 30 seconds save you 10 minutes of rewriting. Make the investment, and you'll be amazed at how useful the AI becomes.
